Trail of Dead- Pontiac MI 2013, a set on Flickr.

And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
@ The Pike Room Pontiac MI
July 21st 2013

Amidst one of the most important events in North American history, unfolding the viscera of Detroit, a poignant happening occurred to shake the minds of those who were present into a different latitude. Trail of Dead unleashed a color necessary to whip the mindful out of their geographically coerced somberness and into a place of curing, cerebral vigor. The alter tuning, pedal enhanced attack had enough light to shine on anyone willing to be there on a Sunday night in Pontiac. From start to finish, the nonstop bleeding of instrumentation fashioned by these gents produced a quality, intimate evening.
On the road, one day removed from the vast clamor of the Pitchfork festival, Trail of Dead arrived in Michigan to play the Pike Room, which exists at the opposite end of the spectrum from a large scale festival. There was neither a sea of people in front of them, nor a cascade of day long sounds before and after them, but more simply, a comfortable gathering of likeminded characters. Aside from the opening acts, which were fantastic in their own right, there was simply the band and their followers. An intimate evening at a table for few with none left disappointed.
It is not difficult for a band of their stature to motivate themselves to venture into an evening such as this. Bassist Autry Fulbright II mentioned that it would not matter if it were enough people to fill a stadium or just one person, the show would remain the same. This attitude rang true throughout the performance complete with three and four part harmonies led by Conrad Keely, on stage laughs, upside down bass playing, and a game of instrumental musical chairs between guitar and drums from Jason Reece and Jamie Miller.
Hailing from Austin, Texas, an area which has spawned some of the best post-rock acts in recent history, this group has found their niche with a finalized lineup after years of re-casting. The lineup, as it exists now, was echoed by all band members as their most comfortable existence in some time and they played like it.
